The Scala Santa, or Holy Stairs, is a significant religious site located in the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome. This sacred staircase is believed to be the stairs that Jesus Christ ascended during his trial before Pontius Pilate. The staircase consists of 28 marble steps, which are covered with wooden boards to protect them. The Santa Scala was brought to Rome in the 4th century by Saint Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, and remains a place of deep spiritual significance for many Christians.
